Hello! We are David & Katie. We live in San Diego, California with our daughter, Sofia. Thank you so much for taking the time to get to know us as potential adoptive parents for your child.

We realize that the decision you are making is so selfless and is being done out of love for your child. We have seen how that love affects a child through the birth and adoption of our daughter Sofia two and a half years ago. We have a happy, supportive, and fun-loving family that we hope to share with your child. In addition to our daughter, we have two “fur” babies. We love traveling to the mountains but also enjoy taking advantage of all the things our hometown has to offer such as the zoo, beaches, boating, local hiking spots, and more.

We have been fortunate to experience the joys of parenthood through the adoption of our daughter, Sofia. After years of fertility treatments, we knew adoption was the path to parenthood for us. The love and joy in our family that has come from this amazing experience has led us to the path of adoption again. We hope to be granted this greatest gift again and welcome a new baby into our family.

We met through mutual friends at an “80’s party” 14 years ago. Though we are very different, we quickly discovered there was an instant connection between us, ranging from our love of the outdoors, animals, and our mutual love of Iowa Football. We married over 10 years ago, and our family of Katie’s 3 dogs and David’s cat has evolved over the years to include our daughter, Sofia, our dog Duke, and our cat Lily.

In addition to our love of the outdoors, we share a passion for trying out new recipes, new local restaurants, and sharing in the joy of watching our daughter grow and thrive. We share a mutual desire to raise our children in a loving home and both try to lead by example in teaching patience and kindness, showing love and compassion for others, enjoying the wonder of nature, along with lots of moments of silliness and unconditional love.

I have lived in several parts of the country before I found my home in San Diego and met my husband, David. Those experiences have allowed me to truly appreciate all I have here in my life. I love to be outside and go on adventures and also love to be at home trying new recipes, doing home improvement projects, or reading, relaxing.

I have a fulfilling and flexible job as a Physician Assistant. I have had the opportunity to enjoy playing sports throughout my life, surfing, skiing, sailing. I am fortunate to have been able to travel to interesting places, enjoy delicious food and indulge my love of good coffee and wine, but my greatest joy in life has been being a mom. The experience of nurturing our daughter, and watching her grow and develop into a joyful toddler has been priceless. Helping her navigate the journey of life and all the feelings that come with it has been a wonder. I have enjoyed watching David become a father and have loved watching him develop his own special style of parenting and bond with our daughter. I cannot wait to experience this as a mother and as a family with our next baby.

I immediately fell in love with Katie when I first met her. I was attracted to her energy and kindness. She has a very big heart and lots of love to give, which is evident in every single one of her interactions with Sofia. She always lightens the mood with her silliness and sense of humor. I always knew Katie would be a fantastic mother before she became a mom, but seeing the mother she actually is blew my mind. Sofia is her entire world. Katie is loving, tender and goofy with her, as I know she will be with our next child. She wants Sofia (and our future child) to know nothing but love and security in this world. and that is what our children will have unconditionally with her.

I was born in El Paso, Texas but did not stay long enough to become a Texan. My parents moved me and my two sisters to San Diego when I was nine months old. I grew up playing many sports, including tennis and basketball. Excelling at school was also very important to me growing up. I went to UCLA for college and then moved to Iowa to attend law school at the University of Iowa. After three cold winters, I knew I wanted to be a lawyer in America’s Finest City, so I moved back to San Diego to begin my career. I am a trial lawyer at a local law firm that stresses work life-balance which is very important to me as a father.

When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with Katie, being goofy and playful with Sofia, and loving on our pets Duke and Lily. Outside of family life, I enjoy staying active doing anything from running to surfing. I look forward to sharing my love of the outdoors and all that San Diego has to offer with the new addition to our family and watching that baby grow up with our darling Sofia.

David is a sweet and sensitive man. I felt at home with him from the moment I met him. He is one of the smartest people I know, but very down to earth. He makes me laugh daily. He is physically and mentally strong, athletic, and energetic, but is also a big softy at heart.

All the qualities that I fell in love with in David make him a fantastic father. He exceeded my expectations in a parenting partner and father when we became parents to Sofia. He is patient, kind, playful and incredibly loving. He would do absolutely anything for our family. David is always striving to improve himself in life and in parenting and has such a strong bond with Sofia. I can’t wait to witness the bond he will form with our next child.

Sofia is our vibrant, energetic and sweet 2 year old daughter. She has a joy for life that is absolutely contagious! We were lucky to be chosen by Sofia’s birth mother to become her adoptive parents, and are fortunate to have ongoing communication and a wonderful relationship with her. We speak often about the love she has for Sofia, and feel it is important for Sofia to understand about all the people who make up our unique family. Sofia talks frequently about getting a new baby brother or sister. Her excitement about her desire to show the world to her new sibling will make her a great big sister.

We love doing outdoor family activities. On the weekends we like to go on bike rides along Mission Bay with Sofia in her toddler seat. We also enjoy going to parks and playgrounds as Sofia also loves the outdoors and Duke can run and play with other dogs. Living so close to the beach, we spend most weekends splashing in the surf or playing in the pool at our swim club. Sofia loves splashing in the kiddie pool and is in swim lessons so she can hopefully graduate to the big pool soon.

Katie likes to do yoga and take walks at the beach with her sister. She also enjoys cooking, and doing home improvement projects but playing with Sofia is her favorite activity. David likes to play tennis, workout in the gym, run outside, and watch Star Wars.

We like to give back to the community and look forward to teaching our children about the importance of volunteering. Sofia has helped with volunteer Beach Cleanups.

We have always loved to travel, and Sofia now likes to join in the adventures.

We take annual trips to visit Katie’s family in Iowa (including Christmas) and an annual trip to the mountains to hike, play in the snow, and ski. We can’t wait to get Sofia on skis for the first time (and someday our new child). We look forward to watching our children explore life and discover their own interests and activities.

We live in a 3 bedroom home, in a central part of San Diego. We have a fenced in yard with a playhouse and plenty of space for kids to play. We are a few blocks from the local elementary, middle and high schools. Several other young families with children live in our neighborhood, including some of our daughter’s best friends who live just down the street. Our home is located 1.5 miles from the beach. We are also ten minutes from Downtown San Diego and Balboa Park, which is world famous for its zoo, museums, theaters, restaurants, and gardens. Disneyland is a short 90 minute drive away. We live ten minutes from Katie’s sister, David’s family, and our extensive list of close friends and “Framily”.

We love our city, our home and community and really try to maximize the fact that we live in a gorgeous place with beautiful weather year round and so much to see and do.

We have two pets, a dog named Duke and a new Siberian kitten named Lily. Don’t let Duke’s size fool you; he is a patient, loving, gentle giant. He lets Sofia climb all over him and throw the ball for him. He enjoys going on walks and hikes with Sofia at his side. He is a true companion and protector of the family. Lily is our newest fur baby. She is playful, sweet, and friendly. Sofia adores her and calls her “Lily Girl.” Lily is Duke’s little buddy and they are starting to cuddle together. Duke and Lily are an important part of our loving family.

We are fortunate to live within a few miles of family. Katie’s sister lives about 10 minutes away and comes to visit us often. We enjoy many of our family activities with “Auntie” by our sides, including going to our swim club. David’s family is also close by. David’s dad enjoys coming over to visit to have meals with Sofia. He loves to bring her soup from the farmer’s market. Though Katie’s mom lives in Iowa, she visits San Diego for months and weeks at a time a few times per year. She also joins for family vacations and is ever present in our lives via phone and FaceTime. In addition to the adoption of our daughter, Katie’s mom is adopted and offers personal insight into the journey of adoption.

We have a very close group of friends in San Diego who have become like family. Many of our closest friends (many of whom David has known since childhood) have young children and we have play dates with them often. We spend a lot of time with our “Framily”, including holidays that are not spent in Iowa. We look forward to someday introducing your child to this amazing group of loving people.

As parents, we want to raise confident and empathetic children through providing a loving, supportive and joyful home with opportunities for our children to explore their interests, emotions and passions.
